Bridges
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration which allows us to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge makes use of the adjacent teeth either side of the gap, anchoring to them. A crown is fitted to each tooth with another attached in the middle – replacing the missing tooth. This method of restoration is very popular as it is often highly successful giving comfortable, secure, and long -lasting results.
Your bridge will be made from strong materials including metal and porcelain, therefore with good care and attention it has the potential to last for many years.
A missing tooth
Difficulties
With a missing tooth (or teeth) it is highly likely you will experience difficulties with eating, drinking, and speaking at some point. Add to this the numerous oral health issues that can be caused including gum disease, tooth decay, bad breath and rotation or twisting of the remaining teeth and you will understand how important it is to replace a missing tooth.
Improving self confidence
Following the fitting of your bridge not only will your general self confidence improve but it is very likely you will also notice an improvement in the look of your overall facial features. Often cheeks and lips can lack support when you have missing teeth leading to sagging and an aging look.
What will my dental bridge be made from?
If not highly visible your bridge would normally be made from precious metals such as gold. If required, it is possible to bond porcelain to the base for a more natural look.
Fitting your bridge:
To give your bridge, the best possible finish and help it fit in the most comfortable way you will require several appointments.
Initially the adjacent teeth will be prepared by grinding them down This helps to create space for the crown to fit on the top. When they are ready, impressions of these teeth will be taken and used to make your bridge. This process should take a couple of weeks. Whilst your bridge is being made a temporary one can be fitted if required.
When the bridge is ready, we will make sure it fits and feels comfortable. Finally, it will be cemented in place ensuring a permanent and secure fit.
Looking after the bridge
It is very important to maintain a good standard of oral hygiene to help keep your bridge strong and functional. Remember to clean it daily and pay particular attention to the underneath of the false tooth to avoid the build-up of plaque.
We can supply you with a special bridge needle or floss to help with this. Always attend regular visits with the dentist or hygienist to have your bridge checked and address any problems should they arise.
